Some thoughts Romfell colours
Permalink

Now that CSM has released a very attractive model of the Romfeld 1 armoured car, I was curious to hear some dicussions about the "right" colour scheme. It seems, that everybody is satisfied what CSM proposes. At the moment I'm in doubt, whether I will buy this kit. This is surely NOT because I do not like what CSM produced here - it looks like a very good model. Simply  the Romfell never was in the focus of my interest. But we will see ...

According the colours, I have tried to look on the pictures with fresh eyes, just to provoke thoughts.

What I believe to see is:

Picture 1

It is clearly visible that the upper side and the turret were painted in a bright colour, most likely some sort of field-gray. Whereas the side was (as it appears) black - white -black. Now we can imagine, that the "black" areas were of any dark green hue or actually black or ...

BTW. did you know, that late in the war, the order war given to paint German tanks white to avoid accidentally mistakes (an orden that has never been implementet - luckily) Now I was wondering if the K.u.K. army wasn't confronted with the same problems? Which solder knew anything about own armoured cars? What if they had been painted in a striking manner to help combatants distinguish friend from foe? What if the "black" was in reality "red"? Red-white-red, the AH colours! In the same manner they marked a lot of the aircrafts. Ok, I know, it sounds absurd ...

Picture 2

I often get the impression that most modeler have the German WWII field-gray in mind. Skoda's own "court-painter" made some really realistic paintings of the heavy guns on the Tyrolean front.

Here another example as we might imagine K.u.K. field-gray. An other good example of AH- green or field-gray is here to be seen. Just an additional thought!

Cheers, Peter
