German Concrete Pillbox

I read in my book on French Tanks Of WW1 that the Germans tried putting their machine guns in concrete pillboxes and they failed to stop the tanks.  Any more infor on this topic?

More for defence against infantry.
The Western Front is still dotted with these structures.

They also saw improvised service in WW2, Joachim Peiper sheltered in one, when his convoy came under air attack.
