Skoda 30.5 cm M16 Mortar
Permalink

Hello all,

this is the Takom kit of the Skoda 30.5 cm M16 mortar. The kit is not very faithful to the original (to put it politely), so I had to do many corrections. I just wanted to add some crew, but WW1 artillery crews are as rare as hen's teeth, so I had to find a viable alternative. I found out that Trumpeter's Soviet B-4 howitzer artillery crew could do as a starting point. I suitably modified the figures and added Hornet's heads from a WWII German Mountain troops set, that were also modified. Thanks for looking and every comment is welcome.

Cheers,

Marco

Hello Tonys,

thank you very much. I have been hoping that, with so many kits of WW1 guns, someone would release the crews to man them too. Too bad that we still have only a handful of figures...

Cheers,

Marco

I'm awe struck by the lengths "proper" modellers go to, to get their creations as accurate as possible. If I've filed off the mould lines & greenstuffed any gaps, I'm pleased!

Hello Adam,

Thank you, I suffer from a severe form of AMS (advanced modelling syndrome) so, if I have been able to gather enough reference, I feel compelled to try to reproduce any detail.

In this case, however, I had to compromise. The kit as it is bears only a passing resemblance to the real gun, I have corrected just the most glaring errors, but I am afraid that some basic dimensions could be wrong.

Cheers,

marco

I found a set of scale drawings of the Morser in a WW1 intelligence document on Gallica a while ago. They had been made

in Italy from a captured M11. I didn't think to make an announcement and just updated the Landships II article:

http://landships/landships/artillery_articles.html?load=/landships/artillery_articles/30_5cm_morser_m11.html

The French document is at: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6291407r/f67.image

Charlie

Great work, and a lot of thanks for the "in progress" pics, both are very useful!
The pics with background are just stunning!

Thanks a pretty cool piece of work there! Out of curiosity what did you use to make the snow on the diorama?

Hello Gabe,

thank you very much. I used AK "snow" which is a ready to use product in form of a thick paste, that can be diluted if desired. I was not entirely happy wit it, because it seemed to react with the terrain, even if I applied a coat of protective varnish, becoming stained in some spots. Other than that is very easy to use.

Cheers,

Marco

If you're happy - that's good enough.

Only if you are going for competition wins do you have to get anal about it.

It's nice to challenge yourself to stretch your knowledge and competence, but not essential.

Hello Tony,

you're right, that's the way I like modelling. With every new kit I have to face some problems; I rise the challenge, and, if I succeed, that's enough for me. I have attended a pair of contests, but with models I had already made (not built for that purpose). I am a slow modeller and I like to take my time, I have already too many deadlines to meet in my work!

Cheers,

Marco
