The caption says it's a Maxim, but I don't think so. Any ideas?

Hello!
That´s right. The mounting is called "Hilfslafette" (Auxiliary Mount), Model 2 with four iron "earth spikes" (I don´t know the english translation - in german: "Erdsporn").
The scope might be a M12 new pattern.
I recommend the following book:

Heres a french page on the MG08 that has a number of different "trench" mountings, scroll down the page, though I wasn't convinced it has any of the types shown here:

Hmmm. It looks to me to be too slender for an 08. Could it be a Dreyse or Bergmann?

Its doesnt look a Dreyse etc first guns I looked at to check the similarity, it doesnt have the armoured plate over the water jacket... I think its just light which gives that impression...
