Are all the 3 D models on landships II in 1/72 scale? Yes I know this sound dumb but I am thinking of making one or more. Thanks in advance.

No - the models are all in .stl format which means they don't have defined dimensions.

I don't do 3D printing but I believe the program you use to convert the .stl to the printer code can be instructed

on sizing. I hope someone who uses this technology can help here.

There have been reports that the 3D models on Landships 2 print as 1:72 and 1:50 models just fine. You probably need

a resin printer rather than FDM for the fine detail in the models.

Charlie

You are correct Charlie, any slicing software has the option to scale, however as you enlarge the quality is very much dependent upon the level of detail in the model

Here's what I do (and I'm only just about a beginner):

1. Find the size of the real thing and thereby what size it would be in 1/72.

2. Start a Tinkercad account and upload your stl file to it.

3. Tinkercad has the easiest method to measure the size of your 3d model.

4. Compare the actual size of the 3d model to the desired size of your 1/72 model, and then set up a ratio to find out by how much you have to enlarge or reduce your model.

5. Upload your file to Tinkercad again but at the first screen is the option to enlarge or reduce by a percentage.

6. Export the file as an stl.

The only reason I am suggesting Tinkercad is because it has the easiest method of measuring the model.

Is it worth consider offering pre-scaled .stl files for those who may have limited knowledge of 3D printing

or want the model and would just get it printed by a third party?

Played a little with Tinkercad. Would it be helpful if I figured out the scale of the .stl files and posted that?

For example Arie Dijkhuis' 10cm M97 i.R model seems to be in 1:18 scale based on the sizes of the parts in the .stl files.

Charlie

I think it would be great if they were all in, say, 1/72.

I have a handful of WW1 files, but they are all various sizes, and because my brain has mostly disappeared (and what little remains is made of porridge) I have made no progress on making them into 1/72.

It would be easier just to work out the original scale of the .stl and provide the appropriate scale factors to get to popular scales.

I don't know enough of this technology to be confident that I wouldn't make a giant mess out of scaling the .stls.
