Looking for documents on MK. 1 Gun carrier
Permalink

Hello,

I am looking for documents, schematics, or photos that show detailed photos of the interior of the British MK 1 gun carrier. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure anything exists, I have been looking for several years and drawn a blank

There are some sketches of the internal arrangement of the Gun Carrier in David Fletcher's article in Wheels & Tracks #58.

There wasn't a lot of room inside the enclosure to fit the 105hp 6-cylinder engine, the massive Daimler differential and drive shafts.

The engine/transmission was the same as the Mark I tanks but reversed with the engine at the back.

Get back to me if you can't access the article.

Regards,

Charlie

Thank you Charlie, I have access to that document already. Do you know if there are any schematics for the Mark 1 engine/transmission and the Differential and driveshaft?

There is a thread on this forum of an ongoing project to create an accurate 3D model of the engine and transmission of a (I think) Mark IV. I believe the Mark I was

similar. I can't remember whether it was complete but I have a recollection it was very impressive.

There is a surviving manual for the Mark I engine and transmission with drawings but I've never seen a copy.

I had seen that thread and it seemed that it was abandoned unfortunately. In regards to the manual of the Mark 1, I have found a way to acquire a copy of the maintenance manual for the Mark IV but I am unsure if the engine and transmission would be the same or at least a adequate facimile.

The Mark IV engine and transmission were pretty much the same as the Mark I. There was a proposal to switch to a planetary gear steering system

but this wasn't ready by the time Mark IV production started but was used in the Mark V. The Ricardo engine the Mark V used wasn't anywhere near ready

when the Mark IVs were produced.

There is another possibility - I built a 1:18 scale Little Willie cardmodel a few years ago and that had a complete model of the engine and transmission.

Little Willie used the same 13 litre sleeve valve engine and a similar transmission to Mother and the Mark I.

The model designer was Dave Winfield (https://davesdesigns.ca/dcc/) and he may be able to help with the source of his information for Little Willie.
