ITALIAN 400 MM BOMBARD in Battery - Italian Front 1917
Permalink

Here we are
I dedicate myself to another splendid Kit from GB Modelli....this time 1GM.
This is the 400 mm Bombarda placed in battery on the Italian front in 1917... accompanied by its bomb and related trolleys for transport/loading
Thurs

PS assembly was easy, the most challenging part was detaching the two shells that allowed it to be fixed to the platform and/or tilted for loading the bomb

I've made quite a bit of progress.
...base almost finished..
......I also made the pulley system that allowed the bomb to be raised and lowered to facilitate the loading of the bomb...
all that's left is to concentrate on the sketches
until next time
Gio

PS: in the background you can see the Ceirano 47 ........ next version of GB Modelli wink

The model looks very nice - the Bombard seems to have had a large gun crew.

I have a question - how many 400mm Bombards were made? It seems to me that this large and complicated system would have had limited times and places it could have been deployed.

One of these beasts exists in Brazil, of all places.

It was found by Bernard Plumier (the passioncompassion guy) while he was on holiday in Brazil. He thought the mounting was quite

different from the WW1 Italian Army version. I've seen a suggestion the 400mm Bombard in Brazil was a prototype coastal mortar but the project

never progressed beyond a single example.

The Brazilian Bombard:

A surviving 400mm Italian Army Bombard - at the former Scuola Bombarderei del Re (Royal Mortar School)

Ciao

11 men for battery service and 4 for ammunition preparation. It is not a certain figure, but it seems that 15/20 bombards were produced....

Thank you.

The crew size is similar to that of other large caliber howitzers like the French 280mm or British 12inch howitzers.

We have reached the end. The GB Modelli kit was excellent and the Germania Figuren figures were also excellent
