I have a feeling we've discussed this before, but I can't remember where. However, Witold Lawrynowicz says, "A camouflaged St Chamond of the 2nd battery, Groupement lll. It has a non-standard observation turret in the rear, most probably made in the field workshop from a trench observation turret. The tank is named "Chantecoq" and bears a beautiful painting of a crowing cock. The photograph was taken in June 1917."

This is a fake observation tower, intended to distract from the actual driver and commander's turret.

Similar to the painted viewing slits.

Look where the "tower" is (See the cut).

Bonsoir,

This wooden turret, was only used by Saint Chamond M1 from Group AS 31 and AS 33 (Groupement n° X), on October 23, 1917, during fights from Laffaux, ferme Mennejean (Chemin des Dames).

The first photo is the Saint Chamond M1 AsCo2 n° 62473 "Chantecoq" from Sous-Lieutenant Dufour. This tank lost its left tracks on Carrière de Fruty.

The second photo is the Saint Chamond M1 AsT3 n° 62481 "Yette" from Adjudant Moreau.

This tank is the only one (from 400 Saint Chamond) who shot at 1200 m, on germans officiers.

The tanks targets were rather, betwen 100 and 500 m.

Bonjour,

The least polite thing would have been to cite the source of these photos !

" www.chars-français.net " d'Antoine Misner.

The colorization is rubbish, adds nothing, and removes all the useful details of a very good scan of the original photo. Throw it in the trash !

Between colorization and artificial intelligence, in 20 years, the younger generations will come to claim that all photos and films from 1914-1918 were made in color !

Like the false wooden turret, the false machine gun emplacement painted on the rear of the tank was only used on October 23, 1917 and was completely ineffective against the Germans.
