The return of Jedi (stroked out) Jeffery Armored Car No.1
Permalink

Just after building the model of Jeffery Armored Car No.1 from 1916, I wanted to make a model of the earlier version this vehicle.

Due to various reasons this idea was suspended for many years.

But now I have better pictures, and despite of the fact that I still do not have complete information about the prototype let me return to this project.

So, what we have at the present time:

1.     1) A blueprint made from a replica of a version from 1916

2.   2) A few pictures of a version from 1915:
     a). a starboard view
     b). a front-left view
     c). a front-right view
     d). a back-right view

3) The first step – let’s put the exist blueprint to a starboard view:

Due to the perspective distortion, the only object that we may trust to is the starboard surface.
And here we see that the central compartment has different positions at the blueprint and at the picture.

I still have no information if the versions from 1916 and from 1915 were the same vehicle just rebuilt or there were two different ones. If we knew that the later version was the same vehicle with changed nose part – we could say that the exist replica and the paper model have incorrect geometry.
Anyway, they have at least one mistake: the hull (looking from the top) has narrowing from the central compartment both to the front and to the rear ends.
But looking to the prototype (both version – from 1915 and from 1916) – the almost whole hull must be straight.

4) Looking to the information above, we can create a preliminary 3D-model (turrets, wheels, steps and grips were stolen from the exist 3D-model – they are the same).

It seems, the hull must be little wider.
And I can not determine exactly the geometry of the nose.
But this question can be resolved later – the exist information is enough for start working.

The second step became much harder than i thought before.

Here I had to determine the hull width.

I even asked the GPT chat for help and received an advice to make the hull wider.

The nose part is absolutely unusable for this purpose and I started from the rear end :)

The task seemed to be very easy: the exist picture was pretty good and it was possible to calculate rivets to determine the proportions.

Despite of this fact, the first sketch looked awful and unlike to a prototype.

I have tried a lot of versions but no one satisfied me.

But now at least I am ready to present the good version (at my opinion, of course). It is not completely perfect, but it represents the best variant that I could fild.

The original picture does not contain a shovel and a mattock, but the back plate has holders for these tools.

So, I took them from the exist 3D-model and placed to the new one.

The front side became the most complicated part of the work.

I could not understand the real shape for a long time.

Theremore, I found the new picture (new for me, of course) of Jeffery Armored Car No.1

But it gave more questions than answers.

After the investigation (looking for proportions, rivets etc.) I make a conclusion that we have two different vehicles.

Probably, there were at least two AC No.1 built.

I had to exclude this new picture from my work and I returned to the previous pictures.

Looking at them neatlier, I found the fact that the front sides do not have aharp edges. They are curved.

And with this correction the model looks pretty good.

So, I think, the reconstruction can be finished.

And I start the templates for this model.

I read that the British Army acquired about 40 Jeffrey armoured cars and they were deployed in India. Do you know whether the British Army cars were

more or less the same as the experimental models trialed by the US Army?
