BL 8inch Howitzer marks I - V Manual
Permalink

In response to a question about scotches (recoil ramps) used on Mark I - V howitzers I found an old thread (2006) with diagrams of

the Marks II & III howitzers. These seem to have come from a handbook or manual for the howitzers. In spite of a fair bit of searching I have been unable

to identify the handbook never mind find a downloadable copy.

Anyone know of this handbook and/or if it is downloadable? I've attached one of the Plates from the handbook just in case it prompts a memory.

I'd like to update the article on the Mark I - V on Landships II - with the number of printable 3D models of the howitzer available now it deserves a better,

more comprehensive  article. The old thread is: https://landships.activeboard.com/t3882896/8-and-92inch-howitzers/

The second impossible thing is that there is, apparently, an article and drawings of the Mark V 8inch howitzer in the June 1974 edition of Military Modeling magazine.

Found some interesting data on the Mark i - V howitzers. The majority of the delivered howitzers were Mark V which used the 6inch QF Mk II barrel.

The website Wikiwand quotes from the National Archives document MUN5/373/9227: [ Note 2 of https://www.wikiwand.com/en/BL_8-inch_howitzer_Mk_I-V ]

Mk I - 12 (Mar - Jul 15) [11%]

Mk II - 6 (May 15) [6%]

Mk III - 6 (May - Jun 15) [6%]

Mk IV - 8 (Oct 15) [8%]

Mk V - 4 (Dec 15), + 59 1916 [66%]

Total reported production - 95.

I did wonder why most of the images of the 8inch howitzer seemed to be of the Mark V taken during the Battle of the Somme (June 1916).
