The closing down of the free access of the Forum was deplorable but necessary. I will soon try and open it up again, to see if the problem we had before with unwanted outside postings will return. Hopefully not.
So, THERE. The following changes have now been made:
A. Anyone can get in and see the Forum
B. Anyone can post, but any ANONYMOUS postings will be screened by the administators before they appear. Hope that this will not put too big a load on you, Tim? If so, please give me a yell!
Hopefully anyone serious person wanting to post will se the big advantage of registering, and just do that. And if non-serious register and post cr*p, we can ban them using their IP-numbers.
Again: lets keep our fingers crossed that this will work!
The last suggestion would perhaps be the best, but this Forum doesn't have that option.
I will however shop around and see what other Forums are available than the Sparklit one that we are using now. The problem with swapping Forum system, is that all the postings up to date will be lost, and that would really be a pity!!!
These new rules are a test: we'll all see if they can keep the cr*p out. If not...
Still: I'm - as mentioned - very attracted by the WIKI idea. I'll see if it is possible to start a WW1 WIKI as well, to transfer our most valued postings to.
As mentioned: the longer this Forum is up and running the more valuable it gets, as the postings accumulate. This MUST be protected.
Perhaps a sort of three level system is the solution?
First level: the Forum, with all its postings.
Second Level: a WW1 WIKI. Someone (perhaps you Eugene?) or really all persons willing (that's the beauty of the WIKI system) SIPHONING off the best postings into a special WW1 WIKI.
Third Level: When the WIKI articles feels complete enough I simply lift them off the WIKI and post them as regular articles on "Landships". (Like when I published an article on the Madsen MG, consisting entirely of postings from this Forum.)
What about such a system? Perhaps a bit over-ambitious?
The thing is, that this Forum has displayed a level of knowledge that astounds me, and it would be nice to have it sort of systemized.
I have now started a Great War mini-WIKI, to be used to siphon off postings from the Forum under specific articles. I have already posted some articles. You can see yourself at: http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/WW1_Hardware_WIKI
And if it works out, it can be turned into a regular WIKI!
Now YOU try and post an article there, perhaps using material from this Forum, as I did.
I really like ths idea, that said when there are a lot of forums people tend to get divided so we should still post here, just transfer the valuable stuff to the wiki.
