Rolls Royce Armoured Car Indian Pattern
Permalink

Hello,

I am looking for any pictures or photos and information on the Rolls Royce Armoured Car Indian Pattern from the early 1920's. It is allegedly a Rolls Royce with Crossley-Style Round-domed turret. I have never seen any evidence of this particular Rolls Royce Armoured Car.

Thanks

Hi,

Check these out:

Crossley ACs after 1918

Armoured Car Section, Rangoon Battalion, BAF

I'm trying to sort out the various patterns of Rolls Royce armoured cars in preparation for doing a large scale model. The story of the design of the "India Pattern" armoured cars is a bit murky to me. The front ends of these vehicles look like typical RR armoured cars while the back and turret are quite different. They were reportedly manufactured by Crossley with the body made by Vickers. They were sold to Iran, Japan, South Africa, and Argentina in addition to seeing service in India and Burma.

Getting really wierd, I've come across a WWII-era photo of a burned out British armoured car somewhere in the desert that has the Crossley/Vickers body with a typical-looking Rolls Royce armoured car turrent - definitely NOT the India Pattern turret. Other than that photo I've never heard or seen anything else about such an armoured car.

I'm rather new to this forum but Neal and several of the others seem to know a good deal more than I do about these cars.

I hope this helps!

Mark

I've looked more closely at that odd AC photo again (attached) and I don't think it's so odd after all.

It appears to be the 1914 Rolls Royce AC style body on the Ford chassis with the armoured box added at the rear. This armoured box appears on most of the Ford chassis armoured cars I've seen - but I am not sure it was on all of them. The photo fooled me into thinking it was a Crossley/Vickers body because all of the wood had been burnt off of the rear of the car.

I think a lot of confusion is created by using the term Rolls Royce. Many of the AC refered to as Rolls Royce have zero Rolls Royce components in them. RR never made the bodies of the original "Rolls Royce2 ACs only the chassis and engine. So when we have a Ford or Commer of Chevrolet Chassis with say a Vickers body calling it a Rolls Royce is a bit odd. So for example an earlier post refers to a Rolls Royce turret when its actually an Admiralty pattern turret

A very good point, Centurion.

Could someone here provide us with a list of all of these related Patterns along with their official designations, makers, and distinguishing features? This might clear up things and get everyone speaking the same language.
