CL one man turrets - more than one design?
Permalink Closed

Whilst we've been discussing the turret shown in the earlier posted photo of the CL one man tankette we've ignored the 2nd machine in the background. looking at the photo again this appears to have a different turret - I enclose a blown up section of the photo. The proportions look quite different (shorter for a start). its possible that there may have been more than one turret design. This might explain the reference (made by Erik) to David Fletcher having a photo that shows a turret rotated to the rear. Unfortunately without seeing the photo its impossible to have any reasoned discussion.

I'll agree with you there Centurion, that second vehicle does appear to have a different turret.

However, I have long since realised images like this cannot be used to conclusively solve a problem. Images of the Russian T-17 One Man tank made the drivers cab look longer on one side than the other, I could have sworn it was just built with weird dimensions, but then Tim showed me plans for the T-17, and it was just an optical illusion of sorts, the vehicle actually had a fairly symetrical drivers cab.

Just saying, I wouldn't put too much faith in an image like that, it certainly isn't clear by any means. But with that said, it does appear to have differences to the standard CL.I through III models we have been seeing pictures of.

True the camera does somtimes mislead. However in this case the vehicles are parked in parallel so that any foreshortening etc etc should apply equally to both. The turret on the second vehicle does look very much like one of those in that blurry photo. You may remember that I said I thought the proportions on that turret looked odd.

I may have resolved one of the CL turret quandaries. Look at the enclosed photo showing the rear and inside of the turret. Those two sloped bars that attach the turret to the ring look as if they might be fitted on small pivots. This would allow the turret to be pushed right back on the ring allowing it then to be rotated to the rear for stowage. Thus when in stowed mode for transport the turret would be capable of 360 degrees rotation but when deployed for action (pushed forward) only 220 degrees.
