Early armour photos online in Getty Collection
Permalink

Hello,

I thought that I had mentioned the Getty photograph collection on the forum before but a quick search doesn't turn it up - so here goes.

Check out this ca 1938 photo of a WWI tank at the British Museum, London.

And just to be fair, the dismantling of a German tank ca 1920:

The above links are just “scratching the surface”. The Getty collection has hundreds of great images like these of tanks and armoured cars. Just do searches for “armour”, “armoured”, “armor”, “tank” & etc. on their search engine page here:

Getty Photo Archive

The results will be arranged in reverse chronological order. If you get too many, just limit the date range on the search page.

search for "getty images". then from the getty page, search within "editorial". use the terms that MarkV has used. it works.

Yes I can get there the hard way but its strange some of your links work and some don't.

The Beute panzer being broken up is the Freikorps one that appears in several photos finally meeting its fate. It would be interesting to know what its identity was when in British service.

I don't know exactly which tank it is but it is definitely a female. You can make out the ammunition holders in the track frames.

P.S.: Ooops! I'm looking at the wrong tank! There is another being dismantled that is (or was) a female. The tank in the photo you're referring to could be either.

There's an amusing shot (photo number 3364056) of a Mk V hermaphrodite being used as a plough horse. Another example of swords into ploughshares, perhaps??
