By "the edit bar", I assume you're referring to the ability to boldface text, justify text and so on: I was using IE6 and recently upgraded to IE7 (not sure that it was a step forward) and have never lost the edit bar. The only problem I have encountered is creating hyperlinks and it is possible that the problem is within my pop-up settings (at least that's what it tells me). Are you sure that it isn't being blocked somehow within your settings? I don't see how it could be but it may be a possibility.

As for pasting links, I can still do that simply by copying and pasting from wherever. I don't see how that could be removed by the forum. These are really weird problems you're having.

Yes that's the edit bar (or to give its proper name advanced edit menu). I have changed no settings but its gone - I know I'm not the only one this has happened to. Yes I used to paste links justlike you used to but now if I cut and paste a link it just sits as plain text. I also used to to do a copy on a an image on a website and paste into the forum. Now I can't do this at all. I can still do this elsewhere so its got to be the Landships website. The menu bar has vanished before but come back within 24 hours so I used to put it down to the site host doing some changes to their settings. I suspect that the same has happened again. The site does contain its share of funnies (pictures getting hi jacked, some people being unable to up load items etc. I suspect that this is another one - its most iritating though)

I note that I now get any text when I'm displaying a quote shown with all the HTML codes revealed. This would suggest that the site has become partly incompatible with my ISP ( AOL)

I see the HTML codes for approximately 10 seconds or less while the images for the editing bar are still loading. The images start loading, pause briefly, then resume and then the quote is displayed properly.
This may be a pain but are you OK with writing HTML? It may be the only way for you to post a quote (until things get back to normal).

I can write HTML if I have to - I've developed web pages but always used an authoring tool for most of the construction only diving into HTML to tweak and tune the almost complete product. This means that it isn't engraved in memory. But I learn't to double declutch when changing gear in my first car and it doesn't mean I want to have to do it today. Its a case of will things get back to normal? Ah well this pom will carry on wingeing (don't even mention the cricket).

If not particually attached, I'd suggest a browser change. I use Opera as (with my connection) its noticably faster, uses much less memory, unbeleivably safer, and I prefeer the tab handling and layout (customisable) over other browsers. (And great for web work, but that doesn't always apply). I also get the edit bar in Firefox and IE6

If you use the AOL browser, I wouldn't at all be surprised if some board features didn't quite behave, although I would be amased your computer isn't too spyworn or virused to operate.

Also, this board should work with BBCode, which I find quicker than clicking anyhow.

As for the cricket, try living in Australia - not a day goes by without some smartie mentioning the Ashes...

I use Opera and haven't yet had a problem (probably 'cause I'm too thick to do attachments).

Generally, the new site is a great improvement on the previous one, except when the text box for replying gets narrower with every keystroke and you have to start again from scratch.

Peter, one beef that I have with the site is that the latest posting isn't on top - it can be as far away as early december - is there a cure for this?

Regards,

Tony

PS - make that March last year!!!

I will check and see!

PS. Regarding the edit-bar: I have it, and have never lost it, so I'm afraid many things point to the problems being either in your ISP or your browser.

The host appears to be using an invalid XML character. Some browsers may tolerate this but other may not. This could be the problem see below message I get when trying to open XML

An invalid character was found in text content. Error processing resource 'http://www.activeboard.com/rss.spark?forumID=635...

Error console can't find anything, but failed validation with 333 errors & warnings, but not one "invalid character."

Several invalid entity referances and such though, but all would be part of the forums native code, and probably unchangeable.

What could be your problem is that it isn't XML - its invalid html4.1, with numerous undefined scripts, and presumably a healthy chunk of php.

The lack of a doctype decleration and character encoding means your browser is falling back to something else, such as XML.

I'm quite sure Opera falls back to html, with UTF-8 as the language, which would then be why I have no problem. If you can find some way to change this, it could well fix your problem. Language/Encoding is normally under the view menu, I'm not sure if you'd be able to change the coding without editting the source, and to my knowledge, Opera is the only browser that allows you to edit directly from cache.

This is something akin to what I thought - its the forum host using non standard coding - HTML as your analysis shows. Now about 5 years ago I project managed the porting of Opera onto one of Nokia's PDAs/phones (the model some times known as 'the brick') At that time of the three major browsers available Opera was the least tolerant of non standard HTML Doubtless things have changed since then. I have tried opening the forum from Explorer directly rather than through the ISP's page (I use AOL) and lo and behold all the features are back! This would suggest that there is something in the coding of the site that AOL doesn't like. Given that AOL are one of the largest ISPs around perhaps its something that Peter would like to draw to the attention of the avtiveboard people?

Will do. This is of course not good for our hosts.
