Kokampf Putilov Garford
Permalink

Hi!
Following the discussion with Eugene about the putilov Garford, I eventually post some pics of my own model yet in progress.

I used an old armo kit I've built some years ago and add some modifications after the removal of the paint.

I reworked the cab roof and the turret and add some typical details of the Kokampf vehicle seen on this forum and hope I'm not too far from the real thing. Some other are not yet in place (protection other the gun) for painting purpose.

Well now... all comments are welcome...
Just open fire!

Regards
Gilles

You have done a terrific job on this one, looks very promising!
Is it 1/72 scale?

Thanks Kaiser...
In fact it is 1/35 scale... My finger are to big and clumsy for the braille scale!

Gilles,

One of your modifications neatly solves my biggest problem with this kit, the hatch that you put over the rear half of the turret conceals the incorrect depth of the open compartment inside. That had me pretty much stymied, and I was looking at a complete scratchbuild of the turret to replace it. Did such a hatch definitely exist on the real thing, and if so was it a German addition or on the Russian original? It makes perfect sense to enclose the turret, but I don't think I've ever seen a photo of the top of it.

What were the reasons for your other modifications? Did you spot other inaccuracies with the kit? Was there something wrong with the front suspension springs, or was the resin just too weak (I've broken at least one of mine)?

Anyway, it looks great, as usual!

as I remember from the research I was doing before I built my model, the armored car had several versions the hatches on the top are different on some cars, I am getting information together on a article about the armored car and hopefully I would be able to address all the different versions.

Thanks for comments!

About my choice...

The easier point concern the front springs.

As you notice they are too weak especially for such a big resin box. On my own kit I broke one too and add some plastic to avoid deformation. in the same way I use needle to joint them with the bodie.

About the turret, I agree with Eugene, there are different design. Some have angled turret roof and some a flat one. The Kokampf truck seems to get the flat type. From this point the disposition of the hatches is more incertain. I disposed my own using the drawings I get, just because the layout seems to be correct regarding the position of the crew on the pics, but I cannot say more... Size and openning direction remain conjectural. I'm more happy with the roof of the cab. Using the same way, I quite sure there was an aperture behind both mg barbettes cause of the sitting crew there.
My modelling way in such a situation is to built something acceptable and logical with my doc. But to be strictly honest, the hachtes are yet glued with PEA glue to allow changes if I get more info!
A reason why I thing a modell is never finished!

It is possible to spot some orther inaccuracies in the model itself : in not very happy with the side armor plate above the rear whells, the cab roof should be a beat more angled I think. Until now, the road lights are just provisionnal until I found more rounded item. The other modifs come from the pic : tool boxe, and limber on the side, step, modified armoured flap the right side of the cab...

It would be much easier to built Tiger in fact but...

Gilles

Hi!
I eventually finished the Putilov Garford. Even not 100% accurate, It seems reasonably close to the pics to me.
The kokampf number is pure speculation and I paint it with water ink in the case I eventually found a pic with the real one. Thank to all the people who help me to finish the work!

With some "artistic effect"...

all the comments are welcome!
Best regards
Gilles

My compliments! A well chosen vehicle in an original setting; a job well executed!
The only thing withholding me to make the same vehicle in 1/76 scale, is not knowing the exact numbers on the licence plate and the Kokampf plate. Glad that didn't withhold you, Gilles! I've added some photo's of the Garford in Freikorps service, although they don't show the Kokampf numbers...

all the best,
Michel.

Thanks for your comment, it's a real pleasure to post on a forum not only dedicated to Shermies and Tigers!

Thank you to Michel!
I understand your point of view and I'm not far to think you're right. But have today few dozen of kits waiting for finish, just because I cannot find THE missing picture to fix a detail (My Hedi is stopped for six or seven years!) and my wife hardly accept I buy new kits
So I've changed my mind, and now try to go as close as I can even if there is some problems remain, but finish!
That's why I use water ink for some markings on the Garford too.
Regards
Gilles

Gilles,
That same problem caused me to start making decals myself, which allowed me to finish a whole series of models now. The water ink markings are a clever idea, although I wonder after how long the ink will have dried too much to be dissolved in water again... And on the other hand: if no proof turns up on the exact numbers, there's nobody who can say you did it wrong!
And on the Shermans and Tigers: I have none in my collection and if I would ever build one of them, the Tiger would be in Hungarian colours and the Sherman in Dutch or Chinese colours.

all the best,
Michel.

Another stunning model, Gilles! Have you considered putting it in a diorama? - it would look great next to some Freikorps figures. The ICM stormtroopers look like they would be easy to convert.

Thanks!

You're right!
I will built a small scene as soon I can found the figs. The ICM stormtroopers are rather good but too much "in action". I would like to found standing soldiers with coats even if I have to convert some WW2 soldiers, but I should wait until I'll back to France cause I cannot find a lot of fig in Lebanon!

Gilles,
There is a photo on eBay (item no. 150097953894) that shows the fornt of the vehicle that you modelled as well as a clear shot of the licence plate. The number is MKIII 02452.
It's always the way; the one picture you need turns up after you finish the model.

One more point about the photo; check the crew. Very few of them look older than schoolboys.

Never seen this pic before, thanks a lot for the info!

Well? I just have to remove my markings and paint new ones
Even if I'm not sure the vehicle is the one I wanted to depict (the license plate numbers seems to be different) there is no reason the bonnet plate was...
I don't know if I'm happy or not : I'm sometime afraid building model is just a way to found new pics. I will now finish my Hedi to obtain some nice original factory drawings!
Regards
Gilles
