OT: Preying Mantis Tank Patent - Vilkata
Permalink

Much later than WW1, but probably of interest to Vilkata and Centurion, is a patent for what looks suspiciously like the Preying Mantis Tank on this old thread:

http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=63528&p=3&topicID=8413199

It's under the name of Ernest Tapp, and can be found with this number GB577274 using the 'Number Search' on this site:

See attached for a taster.

Thanks Roger

This is the original of the preying Mantis - Tapp had the first idea for a one man vehicle but Martell recommended that it be dveloped as a 2 man job, presumably as a result of his own experiences with one and two man tanks. Tapp first got the idea during WW1 (when he was a machine gun officer) when he observed a tank action.

Ah! The one-man Mantis ! Incredible ! Thank you so much for finding this Roger! I've been looking for information on this vehicle for ages.

Of special interest in the patent drawings is the final drawing... It shows a theoretical improvement to the chassis drawn out in un-detailed form.

Apparently Tapp had the foresight to realise that even with the elevated crew compartment, the gunner/drivers field of view and arc of fire would be drastically limited.

Well, why not just make the entire crew compartment swivel at the base as well as raising up and down? Haha, that would make a bizarre vehicle...

Thank you again Roger! I really appreciate it.

Especially when it tipped over as the driver traversed to the side!
