Softskin ID Numbers
Permalink

I note that all Brit trucks have the prefix 'WD' before their ID numbers and saw a recent post of a Vauhall staff car with the 'HC' prefix.  Was wondering what the lettering/numbering scheme is.  Similar info has been published for Brit tanks, but I've never seen it for other vehicles/countries.  Would appreciate any and all info.

Up to 1914, the registration numbers of motor transport with the ASC was usually given a prefix. For example BF for Bulford, CL Colchester, LM Longmoor, E for Edinburgh etc.

Off the top of my head i have no idea where HC might be, but you can be fairly certain that it was a garrison town. I will have a look at the index in the back of my atlas later on and see see if anything comes to mind.
