I don't remember seeing this before. Sorry if it's an old favourite. Anyone identify it?

Well, the caption ("Zillebeke") suggests it was destroyed during fighting in July to October around Passchendaele. The card also says "A3" if my fuzzy eyes aren't lying to me. So that should identify it! Unfortunately I don't have sufficient info on A Battalion at Passchendaele to tell you much. I know A3 at Messines was "Apricot" and I think A3 at Cambrai was "Antigone", but A3 at Passchendaele is a mystery to me I'm afraid. Wouldn't even like to say if it's Male or Female.

"A" Battalion received its unditching beams and rails on July 5, 1917. That might suggest that this tank is a victim of the June fighting at Messines, since the unditching gear is not visible in the photo. However, the tank does appear to have been partially salvaged (the rear sprocket, hull plates and tracks have been removed) so perhaps the unditching gear has been taken from the wreck. Zillebeke is close to Hill 60, which was the northern limit of the Messines battle, but there is no mention in the A Bn. War History of tanks in action there.
The photo appears to have been taken post-war. The Michelin Guide (issued in the early 1920's) included the "tank graveyard" near the Menin Road in the guide's itinerary for a tour of the Zillebeke vicinity - perhaps it is one of these wrecks.
