Fantastic.

While we're on the subject, Paths of Glory was on TV again the other day, and Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) is seen on a couple of occasions being driven about in a sidecar. Since his character is a French officer, I assume that it would be a French motorcycle combination. If so, what would it be?

Great stuff, glad my photos came in useful. As for which motorcycle, it could have been just about anything in production - a lot of British types were in use as well, the only photo I have of a French WWI motorcycle is a Triumph model H with a cane basket sidecar for carrying mail

Incidentally there is a film of a WW1 Triumph Model H also on youtube.

I am tempted to say that some of those french motorcycles might have been made by Peugeot. I can't prove it or give any reference; it is just an instinct. I know that Peugeot are an old company that was making bicycles before cars were invented. And they made some armoured cars during the war. And I found a couple of pics of a Peugeot from 1916:

like the Clyno, it is a 6hp V-twin.

Believe it or not, there is a forum devoted to identifying motor vehicles that appear in films; The Internet Movies Cars database.

According to the contributors, Kirk's motorcycle is an anachronism. They reckon post-war.

yeah, in those screenshots, that bike looks beefy enough to be a WW2 vehicle; compare it with the weedy little Peugeot or Clyno.

but it probably is French, or at least, not British; notice that the sidecar is on the right of the bike, not the left.

Hi All, My initial impression was That this bike was of foriegn manufacture and according to the movie car guys its a Mars MA.25 from the 20' or 30's and I have seen something similar many years ago when I was heavily into classic MC's....although without the sidecar....

This machine has a number of features that would point to it being pre 50's in any case, the front suspension is of an old fashioned kind no telescopics there and it looks like there's no rear suspension at all.....of course it could be a mock up (something about Honda in the film credits), but my impression is its an original 1930's ish Motorbike even if it isnt a Mars....
