Hi, I need a hi-res scan or a photographic print of a MkIV (or MkV) tank. This is to illustrate the cover of an upcoming booklet on tanks in WWI in Canadian service (www.servicepub.com/weapons.htm) I have prints of the example at Aberdeen but would prefer to use the tank at the Belgian Army Museum. LLo-res images appear elsewhere on this site and I would be grateful to contact that photographer, or any other who may have a sharp, quality image that I can use.

I would recommend you contact the Museum itself. Using a photo of one of their exhibits on the cover of your booklet without permission may infringe copyright. I believe that other museums become very irritated by photos of their exhibits being published without consent being sought. For example, if you visit the Museum of Lincolnshire Life to photograph Flirt you're supposed to sign a photographic consent form that states the images can only be used for private study and not publication.
There is wide-spread misunderstanding of copyright. An individual who takes a photo of a museum exhibit has created an Intellectual Property (IP) and is the copyright holder. This is like writing and publishing a story about an individual - the writing is your copyright and the person cannot prevent you from using your writing as you wish. If, however, you libel the person then they have recourse but that is a whole different set of laws. The museum may have a policy that images of items in its collection can only be reproduced with their permission (and a fee) this is only a policy and cannot be enforced - unless that country has specific legislation and I am not aware of any. Where the granting of permission to photograph states that it is not for publication then the photographer accepts that as a condition and should abide - but this is a moral undertaking and not a legal one. Where no stated policy is advertised then any photo taken can be used by the creator of the IP. In any event, I have been in touch with the Belgian museum and am waitiing for their CD to arrive. Normaly every museum is glad about costless advertisement ,so i think you will get full support by the Belgian one . But i know of some troubles with the German Museum in Munic. They are serving even private phptographers like criminals. Hope You present your booklet here for all!!
