A7V kit in 1:35
Permalink

Hi, sorry to bother you but I am looking for some advice, I am looking to buy a relatively easy to build A7V kit and down here (Australia) there don't seem to be many around.

I have, over the last couple of years built Games Workshops 40k vehicles for my sons, who are well into the game and having Mephisto in the local museum sort of draws me to building an A7V kit but I would like to build one in 1:35 as the eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

When I was in the army one of my good friends was a relative of the 'tank boys' that captured Mephisto and when I was told about this, I went to the old museum to have a look at the tank. At that time it was in the open with just a roof over the top of it to protect it from the elements but not from the souvenir hunters unfortunately. Now Mephisto sits behind glass in the new museum and they have produced a little book on it and sell posters and plans of the tank.

I am not too sure if I would prefer to work on a plastic or resin kit, the only resin that I have worked on was a couple of Armorcast 'titans' for the boys and they were fairly basic, but large kits. Reading about individual linked tracks made me think that I would probably be better building a Tiger as everyone builds a Tiger at some point in their modelling but each time I see Mephisto I tell myself that I have to build an A7V.

So can you tell me which one is the best one to build?

Thanks,

If you want to build "Mephisto", the 1:35 Sparta Modellbau resin kit is the first choice. It's a fairly exact replica of "Mephisto" and sell at about 150,- Euro (if you can get one). The 1:35 Tauro plastic kit is inaccurate and not suitable for conversion into "Mephisto".

Any links to these models?

I just found this.

http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/german/a7vmn_1.html

I am just looking for a decent kit to build, for me not my boys. The A7V would not have to be Mephisto which is a converson from female to male and from what I have read no two A7V's were the same.

Does anyone know if the Germans made an A7V recently as a team from Germany came out and made detailed measurements of Mephisto and all the parts that were in storage. (Pity it was looted by so called historians when it was transferred from the old museum to the new one by the river!)

I gather that the gents from the Panzermuseum in Munster took measurements of Mephisto when they were building their replica, but that was, I believe, in the late 1980s. http://www.panzermuseum.com/german-army/panzer/a7v.html If this visit was more recent it could be for any number of reasons - just about everyone is fascinated by the A7V.

There were no female A7Vs; all 20 carried the 57mm gun, although they varied considerably in many details. Are you thinking of the post-War A7V lookalikes?: http://www.landships.freeservers.com/a7vhedi.htm

Thylacine,

Tauro make an A7V in 1/35th in two versions

http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-TAURO-1-35-STURMPANZERWAGEN-A7V-WW1-GERMAN-TANK_W0QQitemZ380081146759QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item380081146759&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

and

I have heard that the only difference between them is the decals, and Mad Zeppelin and others say it is inaccurate. I wouldnt know; its not my scale.

Weston Toy Company make a toy A7V; no assembly required, but it might be fun to 'detail' it.

Might be fun to detail the Tauro kits too. Who knows!

I think they are the only ones in plastic; but its not my scale so I wouldnt know for sure.

There is some odd stuff around though, when you start to look; like this:

in case you wanted to model just the front of an A7V!

or a couple of videos:

Hope that helps a bit, and good luck with the project.

That's not entirely accurate. One (501) was finished and saw action as a female before being fitted with the 57mm. Several were production line conversions from females to males (506 being one) and have large flaps fitted to the forward MG ports instead of the smaller pistol ports fitted to the true males.
