As i've been lucky enough to win a free flight with Jet2 airlines, i'm going to take the opportunity to fly over to Albert and have a 4/5 day walking tour of the Somme. I've never been before, and was wondering if there was any relics of the Great War still around, ie artillery or even vehicles (although I doubt that), at any memorials/museums etc in the Battle of the Somme area.

Cheers, Rob

Brilliant.

There's a sort of catacombs museum in Albert that is very atmospheric, and a bit further away is the museum at Peronne. The latter is very smart and well done. Lots of uniforms, MGs, etc. No large-scale or heavy ordnance, though; you'd have to go to Brussels for that.

Since I was last in Arras the underground shelter that was discovered has been opened to the public It looks fantastic.

I wonder if those catacombs are the same ones that I have seen in documentaries? I watched them and thought, 'I wish they'd open those up to the public'.

I'm jealous, Rob! But I know you're a good photographer, so I can enjoy it vicariously.

The museum at Albert has been there for a very long time, I think. [Opened July 1st 1992, I now learn]

The caves under Arras seem to have been known about for a long time but only opened last year. But I'm sure there was a story a couple of years ago about an underground hospital being found by blokes digging up the road or something. Not sure if that was a separate discovery or part of the bigger picture.

Not my usual newspaper of choice, but this article from the Daily Mail is quite good.
