Farewell Present
Permalink

Dear All,

today I would like to share again something I just bought for my collection.

It is a farewell present to German Captain from his comrades.

Among other things the treaty of Versailles forbid tank troops for the German Reichswehr. But a small troop called the "Kraftfahrtruppe" (motor troops) kept the rememberance of the German tank troops awake. Still it was no fighting troop and had no armoured cars beside some Sd.Kfz 3 which had no right to call them armoured fighting vehicles. A lot of well known tank commanders of WW2 (like Guderian) served in this units before WW2 and some of them learned a lot from old tank commanders of WW1 (like Volckheim).

Well .... how strong their wish was, becoming a fighting troop, will show you this present. It was given to Captain Naumann from his comrades of the "Kraftfahrabteilung 4" (motor unit 4 - every Division had 1) as he left this unit. He served in this unit from 1st January 1921 to 31st March 1927. I am still researching his life, but it seems that he became Captain in 1917 and became later commander of a tank teaching unit in 1942 as Lieutenant Colonel.

Amazing ... isn't it?

Cheers
Chris
