I asked this question on the Great War Forum, and it was suggested that I ask here as well
I'm looking for any reference to a tank named Dun Cow, which I've failed to find in any of my books or on internet searches.
A colleague at work was told by his grandfather, Albert Mitchell, that he trained as tank crew, and was captured in his first action in his tank HMS Dun Cow. That's all there is to go on.
Thanks for any help or suggestions
responses on the Great War Forum were:
>No sign of it in the late 1917 batch at Cambrai >Not one of the original 1916 group either, sorry
I havn't heard of tank with this name, but might suggest sending a PM to another member of the forum, Mike Cooper (coopmik1418). I believe that he has gathered a considerable amount of information about the markings of British tanks during the Great War.
Instead of looking for the tank, it might be better to research Mr. Mitchell's war service to find out where he was between 1916 and 1919. That should narrow down which tank companies he may have been in.
I have posted a reply on the GWF. I have never before come across Dun Cow, and suspect that it may be an earlier (i.e. HBMGC) name rather than a later (i.e. D Battalion, Tank Corps) name. In my GWF post I suggested the same approach that Mark advocates above.
