It's one of the most popular photos to be found on ebay, but I've not seen it in such detail before and consequently have not noticed that there is something written on the sponson. I recall there was a previous thread that also had a picture of a number painted on a sponson, but I have been unable to find it so far.

Well spotted! This is a better reproduction of the photo than I've previously seen and this is also a detail that had eluded me. I'm having some trouble reading it. Could it be upside down?
What a puzzle! I would agree that the inscription appears to be upside down, but I can't think of a good reason why this should be the case. The tank's paintwork seems to show extensive fire damage or wear, and perhaps an underlying factory inscription has been exposed (TRACE THIS PART ?).
The previous sponson number thread involved a photo of tank C6 at Arras posted by Mark Hansen, showing number 752 on the front horn and side of the sponson.
I would agree this is likely to be a factory inscription. I would expect that such inscriptions might be found any way up. Rhomboid's suggestion of "Trace this part" is inspired!
I'm glad I'm not just seeing things! It does look like it is upside down, but that doesn't make much sense to me. However, when it is the right way up I can't resolve it into anything meaningful. The thin blade of grass hanging over it doesn't help either!
I was hoping that someone might say, "Aha! That says Devil, because 799 was Devil' or something along those lines!
