More Mark Vs as monuments in Russia & Ukraine

Two photos here.  Can anyone tell me where the colour photo was taken?  Incidentally, this is a wartime photo and not a modern one - note the Wehrmacht soldiers.  All I can say is that there were a pair of tanks in Kharkov, Leningrad, Kiev, Archangel, Rostov-on-Don, Smolensk and Voroshilovgrad, but the German Army didn't reach all of these.  And I don't believe it's Smolensk, Kharkov or Kiev as I have photos of the tanks in these.  So is it Rostov-on-Don or Voroshilovgrad?

I thought my eyes were deceiving me when I first saw the second photo, which I believe to be one of the tanks in Kiev.  Surely this isn't a chequerboard tank - but I think it is.  I believe the tank was repainted later but even so I reckon you could still see the chequerboard design showing through.  Was this paint scheme used when the tank was in service, and if not why go to this trouble for a monument?  I wondered if the paint scheme had anything to do with a chess championship, or whether it was just a nasty punishment for a graffiti artist.  Anyone know more?

Hi Ironsides

Yes, I saw this thanks. I have about a dozen photos of this tank, I just posted the one with the most architectural detail. I read the markings for Kharkov and Dessau as being signposts on the direction to take to reach there, and not where this tank was.

I can follow much of the Cyrillic alphabet, but once I've worked out what my equivalent of the letters are, it's not always the case that I'll understand the word. Admittedly, placenames are easier than normal words.

Hi Gwyn after looking at several maps it seems this could be somewhere bettween Kharkov and Belgorod, if not in kharkov proper.... I havent been able to make sense of any of the other names on the sign post though.......
The other locations dont seem likely......

Hi All!

I would like to share with you some pictures within my collection, which I bought in tzhe last years from several sources.

Pic 1 = well ... I guess you can identify ;o)) ("Charkov 1942" written on the back)
Pic 2 - Pic 5 = Murmansk ?? ("Engl. Panzer vor der Kathedrale von Murmansk" = English tanks in front of the cathedral of Murmask, but I am not 100% sure if it realy means Murmansk, because this part is hardly to read)
Pic 6 = ??

elbavaro! Your last picture, 6 of 6, is a Tank Mark V-star in a camouflage paint scheme. I guess you don't know where it was taken, do you? I am supposing somewhere in France because according to the wise men the V-star never went to Russia.

You are right PDA - I don't know where, but - like you - I asumed that the picture was taken in France in 1940.

Thanks for sharing these.

I am still not convinced this location is Kharkov because this tank displays damage that is not evident on the photos of the two tanks recently restored in Kharkov. Perhaps this is Kharkov, but this tank did not survive the war and it was replaced by another, and it's that that has now been restored???

Photos 2 - 5 are Smolensk, not Murmansk. The German Army did not reach Murmansk.

Photo 6 of Mark V* Male 10211 - this tank was supplied to the French Army on 28 October 1918.

Pic 1: it is Charkov. The photografer wrote it on the back and I think he should know where he took it.

Pic 2-5: Yes! Smolensk! Thank you!

Pic 6: but where taken?

Apologies all! I am confusing myself. Yes, this picture is indeed Kharkov - thanks to all. It is of course Lugansk where the tanks were recently renovated.

Elbavaro - I can only think that your pic 6 is taken at a French tank depot. Possibly Mourmelon?
