Gentlemen,

I am attempting to scratch build a German pontoon wagon,  but am woefully deficient in detail.    I will have to make a guesstimate of the wagon dimensions based on the known length of the pontoon ( 28 ft ), and other vehicles in the pioneer train.   Any pics you might be able to post here would be most appreciated.   I have only two grainy examples in my collection,  and neither are close ups.

Thanks for helping if you can.

Thank you,  UncleanCreature !    Your pic is very interesting, and illustrates the earlier of two types that went to war in 1914.   This older version  (  note the wooden wheel hubs ) dates from the Franco-Prussian War and originally carried two smaller boats sleeved on top one another.   The photo clearly demonstrates the use of obsolete equipment even at the beginning of hostilities. ( Note a postilion rider still wearing his blue service blouse.)
The later wagon version was slightly longer with a driver's pedestal & seat, and steel wheel hubs.    German pontoons were pressed steel  (galvanized) ,  with prominent bows on 2/3 of the bridging column.   Serviced by pioneers,  and unique to the German Army,  they accompanied the train of each kavallrie Korps.
I realize this is all trivially boring to some ,  but wheeled equipment has been very much ignored during weapon research for the period.

There must be more photos , or drawings out there !

Is this what you're after? Pontonwagen Leger Museum

I meant to say, tap Pontonwagen in the box labeled Zoekterm/Search. That will bring up their selection of photos and drawings.

Helen, the pic you found is interesting; looks like post-war Dutch personnel.  DJ, your pic illustrates the 1900 model I believe.  It is distingquished form the later model in two areas;  shorter pontoon and crew seats forward over the axle. (1st Pic)  The later version carried a larger pontoon that covered the whole wagon and the vehicle was controlled by the postilion riders. (2nd Pic)

I would very much like to find drawings and dimensions for either vehicle.  Appreciate your contributions, folks.
