Hello vintary.

There were two different types of armoured cars built on the Jefferey (sometimes spelt Jeffery) Quad chassis; the American type (that your photo shows a replica of) and the British type. Jefferey later became Nash.

I believe the American type was never used in anger.  It may have been sent with Pershing's Punitive Expedition, but I think it never made contact with the enemy.

And I think the British type was sent to Ireland but not used there, and so was re-deployed to fight in the 3rd Afghanistan War in 1919.

The American type had two turrets:

The British type did not.

'Warwheels' has some information and pictures (on the American type):

And David Fletcher's 'War Cars' has information on the British type.

Hmm ... if I am not wrong (what could be!), then I think I remember a picture - during the Pershing Expedition - with several AFV of this type and it could be that one or two had only one turret.

I will check my sources and let you know if I was wrong or not.

Very interesting article and thanks for sharing. I wish it gave more details of the Jeffrey cars, such as where they were deployed and who with. The only other mention I have read about the Jeffrey in Ireland is a caption to a photo on the Tank Museum's site, where it said the cars were not used in Ireland but merely passed through on their way to Afghanistan.

According to 'War Cars' by David Fletcher, 20 Jeffery Quad's went to Ireland, and were replaced post-WW1 by the Peerless armoured cars by which time the Jeffery Quad's were 'ready for the scrap heap' by then. Earlier in the book it mentions that 40 armoured Quads were built for the Eaton Motor Machine Gun Battery, were originally planned to go to Mespot but the plans were then changed for them to go to India instead. Four were sunk as well as a partially armoured scout car on their way, sixteen arrived in India and the remaining twenty were diverted to Ireland 'at the last minute'.
