as you can see, it has a marking on the sponson - that of the 12th Division, who operated with Tanks during Cambrai. Does anyone know if this indicates that this particular Tank operated with 12th Division at Cambrai? I'm helping someone research a soldier killed at Cambrai, and was unfortunately ran over by a Tank after being shot, so may be possible to discover which Tank was most likely the one to run him over
Rob, yes I believe that tanks operating with 12th Division at Cambrai carried their insignia, at least at start of the battle (replacement tanks may not have been so painted). But this was unusual and other divisions do not seem to have followed the practice.
Hi Rob and Gwyn, some but I dont think all of C battalion tanks have this marking.. was all of C battalion or only part Operating with 12 Division at Cambrai?..... C41 Cherubim, C47 Conqueror II, C48 Caesar, C51 Chaparone II and C53 Coquette II all have this marking..... C23 Crusty, C22 Cynic and C21 Curmudgeon dont appear to have it....
You may find this thread interesting, C47 has a toy puppet mascot on the side, of the type pulled by a string to make the legs and arms move in the form of a frightened german soldier... the hands pulling the strings are visible above and below the figure.... at least 3 tanks in C battalion had mascots painted on the side... C47, C51, C23....
