I have an Emhar Mark V kit, and I'm going to have to add some rivet heads to certain parts of the tank if I want to make it look realistic enough, especially along the strip atop the sponsons. Does anyone know the diameter of the actual rivet tops so I can buy the right size aftermarket parts? Thanks.
Hi Long Tom, the main rivets I've measured, MarkIV MarkV and Whippet, are usualy 28/30mm but can be 32 and the height is approx 35%-40% of the diameter, ie there are not a full hemisphere. Some rivets are smaller such as those that hold the angle around the front portholes. The small rivets seem to be more of a pan head profile in the photo.
If you look at the attached photo you'll see the difference, also note that there is quite a lot of nuts and bolts about.
I can only go along with the good bit of advice by Chris. The size of rivets do very in size around the tank, and there are two distinct sizes due to the job they have to do.
I would also highlight the part about there being a lot of nuts & bolts about. On so many existing plastic kits these bolts are represented by rivets ... go look at photos of the real tanks before touching your model.
Remember to post some pics of your model in the building

I have every Mark tank picture from this website plus both Osprey books. The Emhar kits have wrong bolt/rivet patterns both along the bar atop the sponsons as well as the rivets on the bars nearest the front of the tank sides, and probably elsewhere there are errors. While some might condemn "bolt counters", the truth is that the Mark tanks consist of plates and lots and lots of bolts, so they are noticeable. And for the cost of everything, why not get it right?
I may be a bit sad but I find rivets interesting, nearly said riveting. It can get to be an obsession ( I wish the forum had a spell checker, don't look right to me) though. Rivets especialy on 1/35 and larger can make or brake the effect of a good model.
Unfortunately kit manufacturers have budgets to work to and getting things right to the degree we would like could mean the preperation costs would be too high for manufacture. I'd rather have a faulty kit than no kit though. Until I joined Landships forum I'd have built the Airfix and Emhar tanks and been very happy with them.
This forum is like a wine tasting group, our expectations and costs increase with experiance.
I'm drawing Little Willie at the moment and the rivets are driving me nuts!! Having it spinning like a top at the museum doesn't help matters. maybe a Panzer I should be up there for a while.

I just returned from a visit to APG to look at the Mark IV and Whippet. To answer the question for the rivet size along the top of the sponsons they are 1.25 in in diameter. The rivets along the rienforcing angles aroung the to outside are 1.25 in as well as most of the doubler plate rivets by the rollers. There are 1 in dia mixed in the doubler plates. The remaining rivets are 1" dia on the sides. The hex bolts are 1.25 across the flats. The large nuts on the sprockets are 3.125 A/F or 2.25 A/F depending on location. Review of existing photos can help identify sizes.
