Sanctuary woods. (Part 1)
Permalink

Outside Passchendaele is the preserved trench network, known as sanctary woods.
Nowadays, the trenches themselves are covered in sheet-iron and concrete, but are more acessable than the untouched ones that are left. This is the British line, concerning a front-line trench and a reserve trench (Which another school party mistook for the German trenches). They are connected by a tunnel network, which is still acessable (Though we did see a rat down there) but its pitch black, and we were guided by constant camera flashes. The network itself isn't brilliantly taken care of, but for a place that is fully open to the public, its pleasing empty of litter.
There is also a small museum, filled with equiptment and photos. What I remember is listed here;

Headgear;
Damaged Stahlhelms
Brodies
Damaged Brodies
Adrians
British peaked caps
French gasmasks
Many, many Pikelhaubes;
Spiked
Ball-topped
Feather-topped.
German Czapkas
German Totemkopf Busbys
French Dragoon helmet

Uniforms;
British officer
British officer, Palestine
Various German and Italian body armour

There was lots of equipment, but I'm no personell weapons expert, so sorry.
And plenty of medals.

While its an impressive collection, Its rather poorly organized, and the man who runs it, dosn't appear to have any interest in the Great War, but only in making money.

Anyway, to conclude, its worth visting if you're not massively interested, but cuirious about the great war, but there are other places out there which have better to offer.
