World War One tank stumpers
Permalink

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew the answers to these stumpers?

1. how many tanks did the British D company start with at Flers and what were they left with at the end of the battle?

2. Does anyone know who was in D company: officers, tank names, tank numbers and whether they were male or females?

3. What was D company's "Dracula" tank number and was it male or female?

Thanks!

I'll take number 3:

"Dracula" was a female, company number D16 and her WD number was 538. There's an account of her action in "Tanks and Trenches" which was written by the tank commander (don't have my copy handy so can't give you a name).

You can get some more info about D Coy. from http://www.firsttankcrews.com/ which has been put together by Stephen Pope. A really well done site.

I think most of the info is in The Tanks at Flers by Trevor Pidgeon. Give me a couple of days and I'll sort it out. The first man to drive a Tank into battle was Pte. A.S. Wateredge. I have recently learned that all the drivers at Flers were men of the A.S.C.

Part of the answer seems to be 24 deployed (12 of each) + 1 Reserve Female .

That's a nice site, Mark. I shall study it further.

Hello Rob , Dracula is for sale . But is in a shop window in Ypres at the moment. Right next to the Menin Gate. If you find yourself over there have a look . I dont think I will be there till next year now, so if you still want her then I could bring her home for you.

Really? God, I remember seeing them on my school trip! Let me think, Just in front of the entrance, next to the road that leads into the gate, on the corner?

We went to Albert, but didn't do any WWI related stuff, or even wonder around town. If it was open, I might have tried to buy one (though you may have heard my story about dogey change, or financial carelessness). Around how much would a small on cost?

Actually I've been putting some of them on Ebay recently, usually for
99p each. most have been selling for around £40.
