75 grenade roofs were ordered on 3/9/16, and the first 20 which were completed were sent to France on 6/9/16. These were fitted to the first tanks to arrive at the Loop railhead near Bray on 7/9/16 - sections 2, 3 and 4 of C Coy. There seems to have been a delay in sending the remainder of the roofs. I havn't seen any photos of D Coy. tanks fitted with roofs; however, photos of tanks on the Somme taken after the September fighting are rare. The tanks of A Coy. (which arrived in France on 15/9/16) seem to have had the roofs fitted by the time they went into action in November 1916.
Alwyn, my source is Pidgeon's "The Tanks at Flers" p. 27 and 42. He comments that the remaining 55 roof frames were sent to France with the tanks of A Coy.
