this is CPO Hill, of 20 Squadron RNAS. He was the driver of Mother on the demonstration in Hatfield Park on january 26 and february 2 1916, and gave King George V a ride on feb 8. Further whereabouts of CPO Hill are not known to me but I think he deserves a place on this forum, doesn't he? (source: AFV in Profile vol.1, ed. Duncan Crow 1970)

Hi Chris...guess you're right, I changed the caption...off course there must have been a driver(s) who where testing the vehicle before, didn't realise that.
Glad you changed the title. Charles Edwin Maughan was the worlds first ever tank driver. He was chief tester and engineer at Fosters factory in Lincoln and as such was chosen to drive little willie and mother. If you have Pullen's book The Landships of Lincoln (seconf edition) have a look at page 31.
