Help needed to determine if a WW1 trophy gun 10.5cm M16 could have arrived in Australia with different size steel tyres. One size is about 80mm wide and the other is about 160mm. The wheel structure seems identical except for this. I suspect that a wheel of a larger gun, maybe a 15cm one could have been used in battle to keep the gun mobile. Might this have been a common practice?
My previous posting on page 2 "Help needed on the German 10.5cm Howitzer" describes what we are doing to restore this gun.
If this is so then it might be better historical value to keep the different tyre sizes rather than have a new tyre manufactured to 80mm.
It seems relatively possible that a field modification could have taken place, I have checked some reference material, and it seems that in case of an emergency a wheel might be taken from another piece of artillery close to the same size and design , and fit to the new wheel axle. Or the wheel could have just been cut down for some reasonLike the addition of RADGURTEL for movement??? over tuff ground.
Or, the wheel could have been mis-pressed, And due to the Germans needing every bit of steel that they could get there hands on, decided hey it will still work, all it has to do is support the gun and carriage????, I guess we will never no.
Yes I am coming to the conclusion that this is what might have happened. I think that the 80mm tyre was the right size for this gun and the 160 mm tyre probably from a larger one maybe a 15cm Howitzer. Will tak with the Local heritage section of the Council to see if they would like it to stay like this or to get another 80mm wheel made when we get them restored.
