The simple answer is that it's possible no-one knows. The surviving records at The National Archives at Kew, and those at Bovington, do not answer these questions. Maybe there's something buried in a British archive I'm yet to find, or German archives that I'll never search, or there's a relevant photo or diary in someone's attic. But sometimes we just have to accept that there's information that's just been lost and we'll never know.
