You might be aware that Ironsides and I have been mucking about on the HaT Forum with those 1960s American playsets that used to be advertised in Superman comics and suchlike. Thanks to Ivor's helpful leads, I've found the details of Flying Coffins - A Complete WWI Game.

For only $2.50 you got what sounded like a fantastic battle set, including 6 "exploding plastic tanks" and various buildings that promised to explode for your pleasure. How the "explosions" were achieved is not described in detail, but the inclusion of 4 metal bombs is probably a clue.

The Tanks look decidedly un-WWI, and the set sounds so tremendous that I suspect the disappointment when it arrived was crushing.

Hi James heres a slightly smaller image but quite readable its seems you only have to register for the largest image...

Interesting Id allways thought you couldnt order from outside the US but here it states 50c extra for foreign and its "helen of toy" too...

needless to say I only dreamed of these....

Just noticed one of the ads quotes the price for "England" - 13/-. For anyone not old enough to remember that curious method of notating currency, that's thirteen shillings. Today that's 65p. Mind you, that was about three weeks' pocket money.

Only Half a Crown for me so rather more then I could afford, as a comparison you could buy 5 boxes of airfix figures or two of the castle/fort playsets and go home with change in your pocket.......

another ww1 boy's dream I guess, the Lionel armoured train set. Some toy train maker, don't know the name exactly made 'exploding' train cars, some spring operated mechanism in it.
