I've always thought it must have been a punishment paint job. Incidentally, by the time the Wehrmacht reached Kiev this tank had been painted again but the checker pattern still showed through.
Thanks for the Kharkovforum link. It had the first confirmed photo of one of the Rostov on Don tanks I'd seen. That might help me to identify one of my unknown photos that I suspect may be Rostov.
