Mephisto gone from Qld Museum
Permalink

The last A7V #506 Mephisto isn't at the Queensland Museum - it was moved out to an undisclosed location for restoration of the flood damage.

The museum has said it will be back next year in a new location above the flood level.

Regards,

Charlie

The museum staff were caught out by the height of the floods, no one expected the water to reach Mephisto's glass case (in with the dinosaurs for the children to play with). Mephisto was better off where it was on the first floor, the glass box could of easily been built there. I went in three weeks ago to take some happy snaps of Mephisto and was told that the display was closed for repair, due to the case fogging up! Seeing we are in a very cold winter for Brisbane I thought it was odd that the case was fogging up.

Is the undisclosed location going to be the Australian War Memorial in Canberra? I know that the staff of the AWM petition the QM every few years to give up Mephisto. Fingers crossed Mephisto stays in Queensland.

BTW, I wonder if the people from the ACGQ who lifted bits off Mephisto over the years it sat outside the old museum or who purchased bits of Mehpisto at their meetings feel like giving back their souvenirs?

I can think of only four workshops that can do that work, two are army establishments, the third is Q Rail and the fourth is an engineering firm. I shall have to go for a little drive.

I think it should remain in Queensland but if it was to go to Canberra it would suit me a lot better, as Canberra is only a 3 hour drive from where I live. smile

What an odd way of going about things.
The tank's having restoration work done to it. Good, good.
It's removed at the dead of night. Strange, maybe to avoid traffic?
The museum's not saying where it is being restored. How odd.

No word on Mephisto yet. It was submerged about 20cm in the Jan 2011 flood.

The Museum has said they are looking at displaying Mephisto on an upper floor of the museum when it gets back from restoration. The present location hasn't been disclosed.

Regards,

Charlie

Thank you, Charlie. It's strange that it takes so much time - many months have passed and Mephisto is still not back in the museum.

Any news on Mephisto? Was damage serious? Is it repaired? Where is Mephisto now and in which museum will it be displayed?
