Sledges

Two pics of sledges being towed, one by a standard MkIV and one by a Tadpole. The towing point appears to be at or above the level of the unditching beam. One assumes that the idea was to prevent the cables from fouling the rear horns during turns. But they seem to be attached to some sort of structure on the hull roof. Any idea what that was?

BTW, the sledges were not a huge success. After Amiens a Major Watson said that the sledges were so badly designed that they would not tow accurately and that the towing lines were constantly chafing and breaking.

I have seen the structure referred to (in this forum) as a "top tower", and it is also to be found in some pictures of Lyric:

Excellent photos, and very timely, as I have been intending to model a couple of sledges towed behind either a supply tank or my gun carrier. My question is are there any drawings or dimensions for the sledges, or any other photos? Also, does anyone know if the sledges were ever used to move artillery?

Alex.

Hello Alex, another picture I found in the Osprey-book "British Mark IV Tank "by David Fletcher.

"...two Mark IV supply tanks, the tank on the right tows a pair of supply sledges...".

No drawings or dimensions, but soon I am to model a couple of sledges, too.

They are intended to be towed by 2 tanks, the pics of the tanks are attached.

greeting,Hans.

Hello Hans,

thank you for the photo of the supply sledges that you found, very useful particularly as regards the rear frame. Super tank models too, I shall look forward to seeing photos of them complete with sledges (please).

regards,

Alex
