Having had Bob Grundy's A7V working repro (from Wigan !) parked outside my office for some days, my interest in WW1 tanks has been revived.
In particular, I am interested in Manchester's role in tank manufacture.
There was a 'Manchester Tank Group', headed by West's Gas Improvement Company, and consisting of 25-30 local companies that made components for the Mark VIII, as well as parts for earlier designs.
So far, I have identified the following companies :
Hi, Nick. Sorry your post has been in limbo. I don't understand what went wrong - the very able PDA and Rectalgia do.
I assume you're also from round these parts if BG's vehicle is blocking your daylight. I've tried to find traces of the Manchester Tank Group, to no avail. I do remember the last vestiges of the companies you mention - Mirlees was in Stockport when I was a kid, and the site is now a playing field and nature reserve; Crossley were still around until very recently; and Renold are still going strong. Haven't been able to find any others, but it appears that the descendant of West's is Simplex Westpile. Here's some info on the company: http://www.nce.co.uk/one-for-the-history-books/701599.article
That's the best I can do at the mo. If you come up with anything else, I'll be all agog.
