This might or might not be about Tanks, depending on the answer.
Am reading George S. Patton's Papers. He differs from Wikipedia on a number of matters and must therefore be mistaken, but let's give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.
Diary entry while aboard R.M.S. Baltic en route for France:
"the boat has about 100 trucks and several 'tanks' with out (sic) the armor. Boat would be a fine prize for a U-boat."
The date is May 29th, 1917. To what can he be referring? Holts of some description?

That crossed my mind, but I think it's too early. The US had only been in the War for 9 weeks or so.

but France had at least one Baby Holt, and the British were using regular Holts for gun haulage - so maybe the "tanks" were Holts that were destined for the French or the British? Or perhaps they had been re-assigned to the US Army (like they did with the Mack Bulldogs, or the Quad Trucks)? Just a thought.
