I just bought the Retrokit St Chamont 194 GPF on tracks. Sadly, it is provided without almost no drawings nor indication regarding the colour and marking.
The first is interesting in showing three different guns - the farthest is, I imagine, the 280mm howitzer, the middle one 240mm(?) and the nearest I should think the 194mm. The last photo is of a survivor at Aberdeen, Maryland, probably repainted many times so I wouldn't rely on that for the colouring.
The two black & white photos appear to show uniform colour schemes.
I have a couple of colour drawings (possibly by John Batchelor) in a magazine at home. One shows a gun in overall olive drab, the other shows one in camo patterns. But, as secondary source-type drawings, they aren't reliable without other evidence.
This is a forum thread (which took some minutes to open for me as there are dozens upon dozens of big images, and I have ultra-fast broadband here at work!) with several more very large photos of the Aberdeen gun - useful to get detailing right, but not (as mentioned before) to get the colouring.
Experts in French weapons will contribute far more useful information, but I just thought you (and others) might be interested in these images and links anyway.
Good luck with the model, and please do display it when finished!
In 'Steelmasters' issue 40 (I think, I'm at work and the magazine is at home) there is a truly superb scratchbuilt, meticulously researched, 1/10 scale model of the Schneider mortier de 280mm. It is a uniform blue-gray. Presumably, this was a fairly typical colour scheme for heavy artillery, so could be applied to the St Chamond SPG.
Also, there is Arie Dijkhuis's superb model, built from the Convoy Models kit (for which Arie built the master!):
The colouring is similar to the mortier de 280mm mentioned above.
Thank you for the information. Regarding the colour, if I had no information, it is the colour I planned to choose It is the artillery grey, I guess. Anybody has a suggestion regarding brand and reference ? Thank you also for the pictures and the site, they will be helpful.
Hey, for anyone who's interested, the German magazine Militar Fahrzeuge has an excellent article on the St. Chamond SP guns in it's 4/2002 issue. The pictures are all very crisp and clear, and there's even an English translation of the article in the back. What's even better is that squadron.com is currently selling this issue for US$4.99. Anyway, I hope that helps someone. Matt
ps: I would like to take this moment to clarify that I am in no way affiliated with Squadron.
I follow the other thread with great interest !!! I am still looking for a maximum of information, drawings and pictures as the Retrokit kit looks very nice with a lot of parts but the provided drawing is very sparce and I don't know where to add the various parts. So I accept all of the help I can find Regarding the colour, I was thinking of something like artillery grey, but Peter Kempf state for an army green or a dark bleuish grey. I think I will go for the grey.
What scale is yours ?
All the very best Eric Gallaud

My scale is 1-35 for armor, but when combining this subject with another topics like aero-subjects,I build also in 1-48. I greatly admire 1-72 modellers because I consider they made a correct decision about the size any collection would demand for keep a balance between space for storage models and cuality of detail. Some inspirative work came from the hands of -72 modellers like STEVE ZALOGA, amongst others. I hope we can sahre effort, so donīt hesitate contact me, my e- adress is in the chapter WW1 railway in this very page of the forum
I sure will paint it (them) in WW1 markings. I will buy the French army serial numbers and will paint the model with either a blue grey like the picture inthis topic or French army green. Not decided yet How will you paint yours ?
