The most original surviving Thornycroft J Type

This is probably the most original surviving British WW1 lorry. It was given to the museum in approx 1960.

All the museum did was slap some red paint on it. However, they missed a few bits. These show its wartime paint scheme.

The green looks to be very grey. Any thoughts or comments please.

Tim

Take into account that this paint is about 90 years old, and that we don't really know if the original paint was the standard for all vehicles back then. Wonder why they overpainted the truck in red in the museum!

Given the locations of that paint, it may never have been green in the first place - it's not on outer panels, but below the bench seat and such like. Looks like grey or faded black, and probably was to start with; from pics I've seen of various WW1 trucks, they were not all uniformly green, but varied, with some all green and others with cab panels or other parts in a different colour. This truck was likely one of the latter.

A two-colour paint scheme sure might help to make a model more interesting than "full khaki". Would have been the Commer Horse Ambulance a mid-grey with a khaki chassis?

It's a guess D, but I think any such vehicle might have followed usual army truck colourschemes - overall khaki with any grey kept to less visible areas such as woodwork inside the cab. Someone else may know better though.
