Strangly enough I read something recently though Im not sure I can source it again, that the renaults were replaced by the M1917s as they became available, at the time I was looking through articles on CARL for info on the MKVIII....
here it is
Unfortunatly the text is too poor to copy, this is from a study article written in 1993, page 5 the figures look like 211 or possibly 213 Renaults and 32 MKVs "All used by US tank forces overseas and all recorded as being in various conditions of unserviceability"
Acc to S. Zaloga (1988), "In 1940 the US supplied 329 Six-Ton Tanks to Canada and 212 to Great Britain for training purposes."
The Canadian ones we know about. Where do the GB ones fit in? Has anyone seen confirmation of that figure anywhere else? Since it's quoted separately from the Canadians, does that imply that (if it happened) they were shipped to the UK? Or used for training British troops in Canada? Or did it not happen at all? It seems a very strange thing to do. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an exhaustive work on the M1917.
Also, and possibly not connected at all, the number of 212 is strangely close to the 213 FTs that SZ says were taken back to USA by the U.S. Tank Corps. It could, of course, be sheer coincidence, but sometimes numbers get into the system and confuse matters. I've never been sure why the US would take home so many FTs when production of the M1917 was finally getting under way. What happened to them? Do they appear on any inventories? Did they remain in US service alongside the M1917, or were they relegated to display/monument duty and superceded by the home-grown model?
Anyone got any info?

I had a feeling that if anyone had a source it would be you. That seems to stand up the 213 figure. And "Two tank brigades were organized from the four that (not 'chat') returned from overseas." So that bit makes sense. Thank, Ivor.
That just leaves the 212 M1917s.

Hi James according to this article M1917 Tankat http://www.canadiansoldiers.com Canada was offered 250 M1917s from the USA but only 236 were delivered, in 1943 the tanks were "sold off to private industry or for use on farms" the source is Early Armour in Canadian Service by V.Lucy a recent publication... sounds like it may be interesting.
Thanks, Ivor. Magnificent, as usual. Some nice books on that website, too.
