Must be a heap of information out there somewhere - the French were masters at fortifications, Marshal de Vauban was the greatest military engineer of the 17th century - and for a few after that as well. Here are some pages from greatwardifferent that may be of interest:

http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/On_Fortifications/On_Fortifications_01.htm
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Paris_Forts/Paris_Forts_00.htm
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Almanachs/Almanach_Hachette_04.htm
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/A_First_Visit_to_the_Trenches/A_First_Visit_to_the_Trenches_01.htm
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Lorraine/Troyon_01.htm
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Verdun/Vaux_01.htm

The "Index" link on those pages doesn't work by the way (but "Next" etc. mostly will) - GWD lost its index some time ago.

If forts are of interest, Osprey has a book on the fortifications at Verdun; I had a flick through a copy some weeks ago, it looks interesting.

I think this is the book I looked through.
