This is a question that has been posed in another forum, and I must confess that I rather wonder the same thing. On the subject of the drivers' cabs, "since each man is in an isolated box with the tracks running under his feet, I wonder how they made the mechanical linkages back to the engine work?"
It might be so obvious that the question is a waste of time, but I can't tell from photos of models and the real thing how it was done.

Looking at images of the Gun Carrier there is a flat tray (attached) which links the driver's cabin and the main superstructure. This looks like it's about 2-3" thick and is at right angles to the
driver's cabin. I'd guess the control rods run inside that tray.
Ah. That must be it. IIRC we had a discussion about the positioning of the cabs on the Gun Carrier, which were much further back on the prototype. I think they were moved forward to improve visibility. So presumably it was just a question of extending the rods and suchlike.
