Now that our good Peter has expanded the breath and scope of this site, I was hoping I might be so bold as to be the first to introduce something which has been very exciting and successful on other sites I haved frequented...and that is a "Group Build".
As I'm sure most of you are aware a Group Build is where a 'group' of members here at Landships agree upon a particular subject matter say, British Tanks, and builds examples of this subject matter at the same time while sharing along the way, the efforts and joys of the build with all the rest of the membership. I realize the membership here is not quite as large as Missing Links or some such site, but I just think since the majority of us are indeed modeler's, that an endeavour like this would be a lot of fun!
Sooooooooo, what do you fellas think?.........hmmm?
warmest regards,
Tread.
Also, I am open to suggestions on our first subject.....please post your opinions so that we might hash this thing into existence.
Many thx for quick reply pard' I'm glad you feel this would be fun, because it's generally a LOT of fun, and a massive learning experience for those involved. Not only do we all get a chance to view and show-off our handiwork in 'real-time', but we also usually get a chance to learn something new about the particular subject chosen....
These Group Builds can be about a general subject, such as Artillery {something we've been discussing lately}, or even vehicle specific, such as we all build an FT-17. In this way we all get to see how each other interprets a particular vehicle. Since this would be a maiden voyage for the idea, we could keep it relatively simple to start off with.
.. might be fun at that.... I'm open to either a tank, artillerie, or LKW... just select one. ( If you're looking for a personal selection from each of us, put me down for the ft17.)
Mighty glad to see there is in fact some interest in this idea! To be honest, I wasn't quite sure. Anyway, it sounds like we've got enough people piping aboard to at least get this thing started.
If none of you mind, I think that for the benefit of having the widest possible appeal {and not to mention the distinct possibility that we all might have something in our 'stash' that would work}, I thought that the very first official Group Build should be about British Tanks, 1914-1918 . If for no other reason than the site is called "LANDSHIPS RIGHT?...? But, at the same time, and right beside this Group Build, I also propose a softskin Group Build. Again, to reach out to those of us who are just itching to build a truck or two...{again, not to mention the fact that I know a few fellas from another site who would be just chompin' at the bit to participate, and it would give them the perfect opportunity to join our happy clan}
So, I will brainstorm today some of the specifics, including a name for this Build, and then talk to Peter {or whomever here can help} about how to create a proper Campaign thread and picture-post place....
Cool!.........this should be very exciting, and a WHOLE lotta fun!!!
I am the worlds worst modeler, and as such will not be participating, but I know a lot of you are scratch builders. Perhaps a group build focusing on tanks with no current model kit would be in order at some point?
An LK-II Cannon version kitbashed from the standard LK-II kit could be awesome. As would the Oberschlesien, 3 Wheel Steam Tank, etc.
Our good Roger said; ".....I prefer keeping it more open, that is 1914-1918, as it could include early prototypes, or experiments, or even machines not built..."
I must agree with this, not only because it opens up more possibilities and/or subjects to be modeled, but it also provides for those of us {} who might be planning either multiple entries, or scratching up one of these very cool hybrids I've been seeing pics of lately....
a tank/air craft dio is always nice, its jsut tricky to hide the wire that supports the plane in the dio! (and the scales can be a mess, unless its in 1/72)
I wish it was mine! It's a model set from a 1929 film called 'The Sky Hawk' which I've just looked up on IMDB. I expect it was made as a rival to Howard Hughes's 'Hell's Angels' (which, if anyone hasn't seen it, features the best Zeppelin Bombing London Scene ever made!). I've never seen 'The Sky Hawk', and it doesn't appear to be available on either VHS or DVD. The chap in the photo is Ralph Hammeras, special effects technician extraordinaire. According to the magazine I scanned it from (Cinefex), the model was built in an airship hanger (!) by two hundred technicians over three months! Now that's a group build...
There's something about rulers and model cities. Hitler used to spend hours with a huge model of his planned new Berlin, Germania, which Albert Speer had made for him. There are some impressive photos of the model.
I like the sound of a 1/72 scale Zeppelin Staaken, they were spectacular aircraft. Someone, can't remember who, makes a very nice 1/144 Staaken kit, I saw a great review somewhere.
BTW, thanks for the email, I've replied now, and I've just thought of something else I want to email you about, so watch your inbox.
