I've attached a rather poor pic of a female MkIV that fell victim to a K-Flak( just visible to the left ).   Can anyone make out the tank's name ?

- AENA, definitely, with 2 or possibly 3 letters in front in the damaged area.

HYAENA would fit nicely with the visible damage, and was a common spelling of the word at that time. But whether it is the first or the second or ... tank of that name?

In which case a quick test by Google Image throws up what may be the other side - and i suspect it is quite well known now you have the name!

And worth checking this out esp if you register and inspect the images.

Agree HYÆNA - see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hero/arthurff.html and picture 3/4 of the way down.

Agree too. I have some Hyeana pics. From knocked out to exhibited in Munich (including a cartoon postcard).

HYÆNA was H46 though I think this only shows on a circular plate fixed to the tank's rear hull, white background and black letters/numbers with the H above and the numbers below.

The serial is uncertain. I believe it to be 2837 but - and I want to emphasise this - this is not confirmed and is based on a reading (by a middle aged man with deteriorating eyesight) of a faintly painted number covered in mud seen in a poor reproduction of a bad photograph taken by a man who was freezing cold and standing exposed in the middle of a war zone, so it is quite possibly wrong.

Thanks, everyone.   Another mystery cleared away.   As an after thought,  can the number be deciphered ?   I can't make it out.
